ABOUT ART OF SEEING
HOW IT STARTED
It all started in 2009 when Faisal Mirza met Peter Sanders at a conference in Conventry (United Kingdom). Faisal wanted to learn from the rich experience of Peter Sanders by traveling with him. Instead of him alone Faisal thought that it would be nicer to join Peter Sanders with more people. Because he knew that there are so many who would want to learn from him. A year later the first Art of Seeing is organised in Istanbul which was a huge succes. Enthusiastic students flew in from all over the world. Since then we have not stopped.
Hey, you found us! The directors of Art of Seeing. Welcome! Marhaba!
We are super happy you are here. We, Faisal and Francine-Aïcha, would have definitely offered you some nice hot tea would this have been a real-life meeting - but since it's not... please feel free to make some yourself, sit back and get to know us and our company by reading this page!
So who is this amazing man we started organizing photography trips around? His name is Peter Sanders, besides a very talented photographer, he is an exceptional human being. He began his career in the mid-1960s as one of London’s key photographers of rock musicians. His pictures of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Who and many others performing are classics of the genre. In 1970, he set off for India, cameras in hand. He traveled for seven months. This trip became a spiritual odyssey that led him onto Morocco and thereafter to the Holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, where he photographed the hajj, at a time when few professional photographers had access to Islam’s holiest sanctuaries. He published several books like The Art of Integration and In The Shade of The Tree. His latest book, Meeting with Mountains, is a forty-year project that began in 1971. It contains portraits of saints, shuyukh, scholars, and men of God from around the world. Some of these people have never been photographed before. It shows the true spiritual side of Islam as never been seen before.
We are creating photography trips where we don't only teach photography but also teach how to look at the world differently. You could say we organize spiritual photography trips. We want to create such an environment in different places in the world where everyone, from the beginner to the expert, may benefit from Sidi Peter’s vast knowledge and experience of photography and storytelling. Peter Sanders believes that being in the company of experienced photographers and learning from them firsthand is the best way to reach that goal so that's exactly what we are creating in our journeys.
